First full week of walking

OK, so this past week was a bit of a challenge. Many things on my mind, and a lot on my plate, like anybody else. But I found myself spending more time in the office this week, or in my truck. I still managed to get some walking time in, but not like I wanted to. I keep hovering around 9,000-12,000 steps a day. That's nice, but I'm doing little extra. Except on Saturday, which was the day I put out the birch taps on our birch trees. It involves a lot of walking, much of it still through brush and snow, which is an added increase in activity as well. I managed to get over 17,000 in that day, and I felt pretty worn out afterward too. Maybe this week, if the birch trees start flowing their sap, I will be a more active walker. And that might just get me to the point where I can keep that up too.

Top | Reply to this Title: Sap Author: Chris Beks Date Posted: 30 Apr 2007 11:31 AM (GMT -09:00) Yep, the sap is flowing, and Yes, you do need a lot of it to make syrup... most folks making birch syrup will tell you that is takes 100 gallons of "raw" sap to create 1 gallon of syrup... We don't really do it that way, making a "lighter" birch syrup. Although the ratio varies due to when the actaul sap was harvested (either early or late in the sapping season) it takes about 8-10 gallons, to make "light" birch syrup. we add some fructose and sugar, plus a thickner, but it tastes VERY good. |
